6 Signs You Might Need a Dental Crown

A filling isn’t always enough. When a tooth’s structure is compromised, a crown acts like a protective cap that encases the entire visible portion of the tooth – preventing it from breaking down further.

Large Cavities

When decay has destroyed too much of the tooth, there isn’t enough healthy enamel left to support a traditional filling.

Cracked or Broken Teeth

A crown holds a cracked tooth together, preventing the fracture from spreading down into the root and requiring an extraction.

After a Root Canal

Teeth become brittle after root canal therapy. A crown is almost always required to protect the treated tooth from shattering.

Failing Old Fillings

Very large, old silver fillings can expand over time and cause micro-fractures in the surrounding tooth structure.

Cosmetic Flaws

Crowns can instantly correct severely discolored, misshapen, or unusually small teeth that don’t respond to whitening or veneers.

Dental Implants

A custom porcelain crown is the final step attached to a dental implant to replace a completely missing tooth.

Different types of dental crowns: Porcelain, Zirconia, and PFM

Beautiful, Natural-Looking Materials

Gone are the days when getting a crown meant having a dark metal line near your gums. We use premium, tooth-colored materials that blend seamlessly with your smile.

  • All-Porcelain / Ceramic

The gold standard for front teeth. It reflects light exactly like natural enamel for an invisible restoration.

  • Zirconia

Incredibly strong and durable, yet tooth-colored. Perfect for back molars that endure heavy chewing forces.

  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)

Combines the strength of a metal base with the aesthetic appeal of a porcelain exterior.

What to Expect: The Crown Process

1

Preparation and Shaping

First, we make sure you are completely numb and comfortable. We then gently remove any decay and shape the tooth so the new crown will fit perfectly over it.

2

Digital Impressions

We take highly accurate impressions of your prepared tooth. These are sent to our trusted dental lab where master ceramists will custom-craft your permanent crown.

3

Your Temporary Crown

While your final crown is being made, we place a beautiful temporary crown to protect your tooth and maintain your smile for about two weeks.

4

Final Placement

You return for your final visit. We remove the temporary, test the fit and color of your new permanent crown, and bond it securely into place.

Cost and Insurance Coverage

We believe financial surprises shouldn’t be part of your dental care. Before we begin any treatment, we provide a clear, written estimate of your out-of-pocket costs.

PPO Insurance Accepted

Dental crowns are considered a major restorative procedure. Most major PPO dental insurance plans cover 50% to 80% of the cost when the crown is medically necessary.

CareCredit Financing

Don’t let budget concerns prevent you from saving a tooth. We accept CareCredit, which allows you to split your out-of-pocket costs into manageable, interest-free monthly payments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. We use profound local anesthesia to ensure your tooth and the surrounding area are completely numb before we begin. Most patients report that getting a crown feels very similar to getting a standard filling. You may experience some mild sensitivity for a few days after the procedure, which is normal and temporary.

With proper care, a high-quality dental crown can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, and often much longer. The longevity of your crown depends heavily on your oral hygiene habits. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and attending your regular six-month checkups will help maximize the lifespan of your restoration.

No, not necessarily. While teeth that have had root canals almost always require a crown to protect them from fracturing, many teeth need crowns simply due to large cavities or physical trauma – without needing a root canal. We will only recommend a root canal if the nerve of the tooth is infected or irreversibly damaged.

Yes! Once your permanent crown is bonded in place, it functions just like a natural tooth. You can chew and eat normally. However, while wearing your temporary crown between your first and second visit, you should avoid sticky, chewy, or very hard foods that could dislodge or break the temporary material.

Most major PPO dental insurance plans classify crowns as a major restorative procedure and typically cover 50% to 80% of the cost when the crown is medically necessary. We will verify your benefits and provide a clear cost estimate before any treatment begins. We also accept CareCredit for any remaining out-of-pocket balance.
