The process typically takes 4 to 8 weeks from your first appointment to receiving your final dentures. This includes an initial consultation and impressions, a try-in appointment to check fit and appearance, and final delivery. Immediate dentures – placed the same day as extractions – are available in some cases, though they require adjustments as the gum tissue heals and changes shape over the following months.
Modern dentures are significantly more comfortable than older designs. That said, there is always an adjustment period – typically 4 to 6 weeks – during which your mouth adapts to the new appliance. Minor soreness, increased saliva, and some difficulty speaking or chewing are normal during this time. Most patients adjust fully and find their dentures comfortable for daily wear. Implant-supported dentures eliminate most of the stability and comfort concerns associated with traditional removable dentures.
Full (complete) dentures replace all teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or both. They rest on the gum tissue and are held in place by suction and the natural contours of your mouth. Partial dentures replace multiple missing teeth when some natural teeth remain. They attach to the remaining teeth using clasps or precision attachments and fill the gaps left by missing teeth. Partials also help prevent the remaining natural teeth from shifting.
Implant-supported dentures use dental implants – titanium posts placed in the jawbone – as anchors for the denture. This eliminates the slipping, clicking, and instability associated with traditional removable dentures. Implant-supported dentures also help preserve the jawbone, which otherwise resorbs after tooth loss. They can be either removable (snap-on) or fixed (permanently attached). We’ll discuss whether implant-supported dentures are right for your situation at your consultation.
Remove your dentures at night to allow your gum tissue to rest. Rinse them after eating and brush them daily with a soft denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner – not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Store them in water or a denture solution overnight to prevent warping. Handle them carefully over a folded towel or basin of water to avoid breakage if dropped. Come in for regular check-ups so we can monitor the fit and the health of your gum tissue.
Most dentures last 7 to 10 years with proper care, though the fit changes over time as the jawbone and gum tissue naturally resorb and change shape. When dentures become loose, uncomfortable, or visibly worn, it’s time to consider a reline, rebase, or replacement.
