Signs You Might Need a Filling

Cavities don’t always hurt right away. If you notice any of these warning signs, it’s time to have us take a look before the decay spreads deeper into the tooth.

Sensitivity to Hot or Cold

A sudden, sharp pain when eating ice cream or drinking hot coffee is a classic sign that your tooth enamel has worn away, exposing the sensitive inner layers.

Pain When Eating Sweets

Sugar getting into a cavity can cause a sudden zing of pain. This happens because the decay has created a direct path to the nerves inside your tooth.

Visible Holes or Dark Spots

If you can see a dark brown or black spot on your tooth, or if you can feel a pit with your tongue, a cavity has already formed and needs to be cleaned out.

Floss Keeps Tearing

If your dental floss consistently catches or shreds in the same spot between two teeth, it often means there is a rough edge caused by hidden decay.

A Chipped or Broken Tooth

Fillings aren’t just for cavities. We also use composite resin to repair minor chips, cracks, or worn edges to restore the tooth’s shape and function.

Old Silver Fillings

Old amalgam fillings can leak, crack, or darken your tooth over time. We can safely remove them and replace them with natural-looking composite resin.

Why We Choose Composite Resin

At Anderson Smile Center, we exclusively use tooth-colored composite resin for our fillings. We believe it is a superior, safer, and more aesthetic choice compared to traditional silver amalgam.

The Benefits of Composite:

  • Invisible: We custom-blend the resin to perfectly match the exact shade of your surrounding teeth.
  • Conservative: Because the resin chemically bonds to your tooth, we don’t have to drill away as much healthy tooth structure.
  • Safe: 100% free of mercury and other metals.
  • Stable: Unlike metal, composite does not expand and contract with hot and cold temperatures, preventing your tooth from cracking over time.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Getting a filling is one of the most common and straightforward procedures we perform. We make sure you are completely numb and comfortable before we begin.

1

Numbing & Preparation

We apply a topical numbing gel followed by local anesthesia so you won’t feel a thing. Once you are completely numb, we gently remove the decayed portion of the tooth.

2

Cleaning & Conditioning

The area is thoroughly cleaned to remove all bacteria. We then apply a mild conditioning gel that slightly roughens the surface, allowing the filling to bond tightly to the tooth.

3

Placement & Curing

We apply the tooth-colored resin in layers, carefully shaping it to match the natural contours of your tooth. A special curing light is used to harden each layer instantly.

4

Polishing

Finally, we check your bite to ensure it feels perfectly normal, and then polish the filling so it feels smooth and looks just like your natural enamel.

Frequently Asked Questions

With proper care, composite fillings typically last between 7 to 10 years, and often much longer. The lifespan depends on the location of the filling, the size of the cavity, and your oral hygiene habits. Brushing twice a day, flossing, and attending regular checkups will help maximize their longevity.

It is normal to experience mild sensitivity to hot or cold foods for a few days to a couple of weeks after getting a new filling. This is just the nerve of the tooth reacting to the procedure. If the sensitivity is severe or lasts longer than a few weeks, please let us know so we can check your bite.

We generally do not recommend replacing silver (amalgam) fillings unless there is an issue with them. If an old silver filling is leaking, cracking, or if there is new decay underneath it, we will recommend replacing it with a composite filling. Some patients also choose to replace them purely for cosmetic reasons to brighten their smile.

Most dental insurance plans cover a significant portion (usually 80%) of the cost of composite fillings. We are in-network with most major PPO plans and will gladly verify your benefits and provide a clear cost estimate before any treatment begins.
