Why Preventive Dentistry Matters

You know the old saying—an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When it comes to your teeth, that couldn’t be more true. Brushing and flossing at home are crucial, but they simply can’t remove the hardened plaque (tartar) that builds up over time. Left unchecked, this buildup leads to cavities, gum disease, and eventually, tooth loss.

At Anderson Smile Center, our preventive dentistry approach is designed to catch small issues before they become painful, expensive problems. We don’t just clean your teeth; we evaluate your entire oral health ecosystem to ensure your smile stays strong, functional, and beautiful for years to come.

Our Preventive Dental Services

Comprehensive care to protect your smile from every angle.

Professional Cleanings

Our skilled hygienists gently remove stubborn plaque and tartar buildup that your toothbrush can’t reach, finishing with a polish that leaves your teeth feeling incredibly smooth and looking bright.

Comprehensive Exams

Your dentist will perform a meticulous examination of your teeth, gums, and bite alignment. We look for early signs of decay, gum disease, and structural wear so we can address them proactively.

Digital X-Rays

We use state-of-the-art digital X-rays that emit significantly less radiation than traditional films. These images allow us to see what’s happening beneath the surface, catching hidden cavities and bone loss.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Early detection saves lives. During every routine checkup, we perform a quick, painless, but thorough screening of your lips, tongue, face, and neck to check for any abnormalities or signs of oral cancer.

Fluoride Treatments

A quick, professional fluoride application helps remineralize your tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and significantly reducing your risk of developing cavities.

Dental Sealants

Particularly beneficial for children (but great for cavity-prone adults, too), sealants are a thin protective coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth to keep food and bacteria out of deep grooves.

What to Expect at Your Visit

If it’s been a while since your last dental checkup, you might be wondering what exactly happens during a preventive visit. We believe in complete transparency and ensuring you feel comfortable every step of the way.

Your appointment is never rushed. We take the time to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and thoroughly evaluate your oral health. Our goal is to partner with you, giving you the knowledge and tools you need to maintain a healthy smile at home between visits.

Making Preventive Care Easy

Routine dental care shouldn’t be a financial burden. Most dental insurance plans cover preventive services—like exams, X-rays, and standard cleanings—at 100% because they know that preventing problems is much more cost-effective than treating them.

PPO Insurance Accepted

We accept most major PPO dental insurance plans. Our knowledgeable front office team will happily verify your benefits, file claims on your behalf, and help you maximize your coverage so you can focus on your health, not paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most patients, the American Dental Association recommends visiting the dentist for a professional cleaning and exam every six months. However, if you have a history of gum disease (periodontitis), a high cavity risk, or certain medical conditions like diabetes, we may recommend coming in every three to four months to keep your oral health stable.

Bleeding gums are usually the first sign of gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. It happens when plaque buildup along the gumline causes inflammation and irritation. The good news is that gingivitis is completely reversible with a professional dental cleaning and improved brushing and flossing habits at home. Don’t stop flossing if your gums bleed—that’s when you need it most!

Yes, they are essential. While a visual exam tells us a lot, X-rays allow us to see what’s happening between your teeth and beneath the gumline. They help us catch cavities in their earliest stages, monitor bone health, and spot issues like impacted teeth or cysts before they cause pain. We use digital X-rays, which emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays.

A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) focuses on removing plaque and tartar from the visible surfaces of the teeth and just slightly below the gumline. It’s meant for patients with generally healthy gums. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is a specialized treatment for patients with gum disease. It involves cleaning deeper beneath the gums to remove tartar from the tooth roots and smoothing the root surfaces so the gums can reattach properly.
